DO You Now About Me

My name is Ahmed Ali and Ahmed means thanks in Arabic. My birthday is on 28/ 9/1983 so I am 23 years old. I have born in Bahrain in a small beautiful town which is called Manama. I graduated from ATI ADNOC Technical Institute in 2002. After my graduation, I worked in TAKRRER Abu Dhabi National Oil Refinery for two years as an electrical technician. I learned many good and useful things while I was working for TAKREER for example I learned how to maintain electrical apparatus and I learned how to work in a hazard area.

I live in quite a big family which consists of a father and mother and 4 sisters and 5 brothers. My father is 50 years old and he works in the UAE University and my mother is 45 years old and she is a housewife. I am the oldest one of my brothers and sisters. We all live in a big villa in Al-Ain in a place which is called Al Salamat.

‘Life without hope is no life at all’. I hope to graduate from the college and work as an electrical technician.

Global warming

Global warming is defined as an increase in the average temperature of the earth atmosphere, especially a sustained increase sufficient to cause climatic change.

The main reason for global warming is thought to be air pollution, especially greenhouse gas emissions. Gases created through human, industrial and agricultural practices (primarily methane, nitrous oxide and chlorofluorocarbons) increase the heat-reflecting potential of the atmosphere, thereby raising the earth’s average temperature.

Therefore, humans are responsible for these changes in the climate. Scientists warn that such changes might have disastrous effects. They include the rise of the sea level, droughts, flood and heat waves. All in all these changes in climate is referred to global warming.

GLOBAL WARMING EFFECTS

The greatest challenge to the 21st century is the problem of global warming. This can be no longer strange when knowing the very bad effects that are caused by such a problem. Changes in the earth temperatures will result in other changes in the other components of the universe. For example, the weather will be warmer. As a result of the warm weather, we can have more hurricanes.

In addition, forests might catch fire because of the high temperatures. The sea level will rise due to the melted glaciers on the poles; this rise will lead to more floods. Furthermore, warmer weather will cause more evaporation. Thus, we will suffer from water shortage on the Earth's surface. This will prevent us from having more agriculture. With all these effects, we will witness more diseases and more deaths.

The problem could be worse than expected.

GLACIER RETREAT AND GLOBAL WARMING

Since their existence in the little Ice Age, glaciers have witnessed increasing rates of glacier retreat. This is mainly due to having a warmed world. The Earth's surface temperatures become warmer so that it causes glaciers to melt and retreat. It has been reported that the glaciers areas have decreased by 50% since the end of the 19th century. Even the size of the glacier is noticeably decreasing in many different areas of the world such as in the Alps. When those glaciers melt, they increase the output of the rivers that go into the sea causing a rise in the sea level.

GLOBAL WARMING CAUSES

Global warming is not just a natural event that happens by itself. Instead, there are many factors that cause such a phenomenon.

Solar radiation has a great effect on the rise of the Earth’s surface temperatures because more heat comes to us from the sun. Volcanic eruptions are also considered as a cause of global warming because they spread the high temperature fluid from inside into the Earth surface. However, greenhouse gases are considered one of the most common and recent causes of global warming because of their capability of changing the atmosphere on the Earth and raising the temperatures.

In addition, gas emissions resulting from cars, factories and other machines such as air-conditioners play an important role in causing global warming.

One Effect of Global Warming

Hurricanes are very strong storms. They are also known as an intense tropical storm. However, there has recently been a question whether there is a relation between the frequency of having hurricanes and global warming. Depending on statistics of the hurricanes frequency, scientists could find an increasing relationship between the hurricanes and global warming, especially over the last three decades.

The scientific explanation for this link between hurricanes and global warming is that global warming causes higher temperatures in the atmosphere and consequently caused stronger storms. Such storms will be definitely stronger at the higher temperatures at the seas. Thus, hurricanes are a serious effect of the global warming which might kill’s many people in the world.

The UAE and Global Warming

Jay B. Hilotin, a Staff Reporter, published an article entitled "Global warming and untreated sewage pose threat to coral reefs" in the Gulf News on November 9th, 2004. In his article, Jay indicated "Global warming has created difficult conditions for marine fauna and flora, the rising sea levels and the effects of seaward development." He also mentioned that Marine environmentalists say coral reefs in the Arabian Gulf are threatened by pollution, effluents (brine) from desalination facilities, slow regeneration of Gulf waters and global warming.
Coral bleaching episode which decimated over 90 per cent of coral reef in the near-shore areas of the UAE blamed on global warming
This article really shows the UAE’s high concern of global warming as a threatening factor.

Individual action

Individuals in the UAE are concerned about the problem of global warming because such a problem is affecting the whole world. There are many things that they can do to contribute of decreasing global warming. Most important of all, all people need to have a comprehensive knowledge about this problem, its causes and effects. Next, they should overcome the causes that can be controllable. For instance, they need to reduce their activities that highly participate in causing global warming; those activities include using factories and vehicles that release carbon dioxide. They should also plant more trees since they have a positive effect on the weather and air. The more they lessen their activities, the safer our world is. However the individuals in the UAE should be more active. Therefore they must follow what I had written.

Summary

Global warming or rising the earth temperature meant nothing to me before my project. I thought that if there will be a global warming that means summer will be hotter, but I found out that it is a big issue.
I learned from global warming project many things; the first important thing is that we all are the reason to the global warming, because the global warming is caused by human activities. Therefore if humans control the causes of global warming, there won’t be global warming. To be honest with you we all can stop and solve the global warming problem if we want, but we don’t. To approve what I am saying let me take the smokers example. If the smokers want to save the world they can easily do by putting out cigarettes, but they don’t. Another example is that rich and industrial countries are responsible for global warming whereas they don’t do any thing to that problem. Yes global warming can destroy the entire world but as the proverb says “you can take the horse to the river but you can’t make it drink”.
